This actually makes a lot of sense. I think there are a lot of concerns about this being an assault on free speech when ultimately it comes down to it just not being profitable to maintain.

The two aren't exclusive. If major platforms of speech are privately owned by profit seeking entities, then the fact that certain kinds of speech are not profitable to host is a threat to free speech.
I think you are confusing gratis with freedom.
You can't get back into the network by paying, so it boils down to a freedom issue.
