In my mediocre Midwestern city wages are stupid-high (for the area—they've gone up like 20+% in the last two years) and anyone who sounds like they have half a clue and isn't sitting there with 3-5 years of clearly-mediocre experience saying they're looking for "leadership opportunities" (HARD PASS) are getting snapped up as soon as they hit the market. Not sure how you could go 8 months and fail problems like that. Maybe after a month or two you should have focused a bit more on what the interviews are looking for...
The new generation are frankly idiotic in how they do tech interviews, which were already not great. Google and Facebook made this situation much worse. It has become a meme.
