That sounds like a very common empathy gap in the form of "it isn't a real problem until it affects me". When your neighbors get laid off it is because they are lazy bums. When you get laid off it is a recession or mismanagement. It is easy to understand why it is so common - it is so much easier emotionally to pretend the world is just except when it would imply you are at fault. |
