Even this 20 line PR to bring back the most basic functionality has been languishing for 7 months https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1478037

Another experiment would be allowing the user to set the new tab page to a local html file without having to create two config files full of magic incantations.

I use Bookmarklets Context Menu in Firefox, it's not perfect but it works.
