Most likely, in my opinion, there's already plenty of paid solutions out there and the bad things you are concerned about are already happening on a massive scale.
I understand that, and most services throw that "we take your privacy very seriously" bit whether that is the case or not. I was simply wondering whether open-sourcing would prove that I actually do :)
