For-profit prisons are indeed problematic for a variety of reasons, but they only comprise about 8% of the US prison system[1]. I’m just throwing this out there because the for profit prison bogeyman, while real, often takes an outsize share of the attention when discussing problems with the US justice system. I suppose it would be more apt to say that the fact that the justice system allows a private interest to be involved shows how corrupt it can be.
