Used to work with Rational Rhapsody. Big project with a lot of fancy state charts - that was nightmare. Visual programming does suck (unless it's Simulink).
Some of what the author advocates for was incorporated in Rhapsody and other tools (LabView) a decade ago or more.
The response to critics is basically:

I think that understates the pain of peer reviewing WSYWIG diagram changes (the closed diamond is now an open circle!) that affect production software.
