Postgres has been my go to DB for my projects. It's fast, simple and has decades of research and battle tested systems to pull knowledge from. Your comment reminds me of a PyCon 2017 talk by Raymond Hettinger where he details the improvements in Python dictionaries from 2.7 to 3.6 which effectively amounted to rediscovering and re-implementing what was standard in databases decades ago.
