The path towards management means less coding, especially the higher you are. VP/CTO/Director shouldn't be coding at all. Your job is managing the people and tech, guiding, mentoring, hiring...

Startups, especially early ones, throw this all out of the water of course. But once you hit 100+ employees the "real world management" starts to come into play.
