I remember having band practice at our drummer's house when I was younger. The drummers mother and our vocalist knew each other. To reach the high notes, she said to him, you have to "sing higher" and your voice will naturally fail down to where you want to be.

These predications kind of feel like that. Kurzweil was "singing higher" than where we ended up. Just enough that it's a clear overshoot, but not but so much that he's off-key.

That’s a pretty charitable interpretation. I would suggest that we’d be in more or less exactly the same spot whether or not kurzweil published these predictions. He didn’t do it to advance the state of the art. Or if he did he’s totally deluded. He was just wrong.
I used to play pick up basketball. My friend's dad told me that if I want to be able to dunk a basketball, I needed to "jump higher" and I'd naturally reach the level of the hoop.
