Progress is being made. The price of graphene has come down a lot in recent years. There's a new process by which you can coat a cd with graphite oxide and selectively burn paths of graphene with a LightScribe laser. At this point its pretty trivial to create flakes of graphene at home with some basic chemistry equipment.
