(googler on maps here) the maps backend team makes an explicit effort to keep old things going, I wouldn't be surprised if old gmaps on some really ancient phones still worked.

Last I checked the pre-2012 Apple Maps (the one that used google tiles, iOS5 and below) still works.

Yeah, it is amazing. Maps only recently stopped working on my ancient BlackBerry.
