I think John Bell discovered his revolutionary Bell's theorems of quantum mechanics in a similar way. I can't find it now in a quick search, but I remember reading that he thought every physicist should devote something like 10% of their time thinking about the foundations of physics/quantum mechanics. (What would he do with 100% of his time?) |
