I'm not sure that this is true. Back in highschool, most of my close friends also happened to be into metal, so we listened to it together a lot. These days, fellow metal heads are so few and far between, that it is hard to find fellow enthusiasts and metal is so polarizing, that unless they are into it, they probably don't want to hear it.
