Airplane mode is the safest option for when our 3yo kiddo play games on the iPad. Unless the app is paid for, it most likely will be full of sketchy ways to make the kids press on ads.

This. It works and it is the only way I can run apps in my oldish tablet. If it's connected while running many apps it slows down to a crowl.
