Your heuristic will fail you when you are dealing with people who are smarter than you are. It is awfully hard to gauge what topics are actually new to someone during a discussion unless you ask them or they outright tell you.

Yep, thats why I only use it as a low-res heuristic. Theres no real substitute for spending time with and individual and really getting to know them.

It's probably a better algorithm when discussing multiple topics. Nobody is an expert in everything.
