It doesn't seem to me like they're suggesting that columns are "discontinuous" at all; On Intelligence, along with lectures Jeff Hawkins has given, describes in detail how columns are interconnected. What they describe sounds to me much more like "vertically aligned" and "closely connected" than "discontinuous." |
