That clears up my question: It wasn't exhibited next to the original mermaid, which is why there was no commotion about it in local or national news.

Interesting, it also says:

“...the original Little Mermaid statue was commissioned by Carl Jacobsen, son of the company’s founder, in 1913 as a gift to the people of Copenhagen.”
