The top part of the screen was in high res black and white and the lower dashboard/console was in chunkier four colour graphics. The Commodore 264 family shipped this functionality built into BASIC 3.5 earlier in 1984. It can be activated with the GRAPHICS 4 command. Before these, the Atari 400/800 had the ANTIC chip to drive the CTIA.
