I haven't read the article, but I wonder if it's arguing that there isn't a difference in information quality between the paid sources and the free. Then you might attribute the spending to “FOMO”, but probably it's more meaningful to call it price-value bias, or something!

FOMO is specifically about real situations, not about just any opportunity cost from missing out on anything.

Extending the term like that is about as useful as saying "self-driving helicopters with the use of The Blockchain!"
