Unless you assume that writing something political always means engaging in a battle, I don't think I'm doing that.

For us it becomes an issue when accounts are using HN primarily to argue about politics or ideology. It's fine, as long as the comments are substantive, to occasionally comment on a politicized topic—those are inevitably part of the discussions here. What's not fine is to use HN mostly for that, or to post in a flamey way.

That word "primarily" is key to how we draw this line. It evolved over time and seems to be the best way to prevent HN from being taken over by flamewar. When people are mostly interested in an agenda, they show up to do battle; when they're interested in a bunch of other things just as much, they tend to use HN as intended, for intellectual curiosity.
