I finished undergrad this year (small liberal arts college), and all my classes beyond the CS101 equivalent used git. But the deepest we got into git in lecture, even in a software engineering class, was add + commit + push and hence most of us saw it as nothing more than a homework submission CLI. Most of our assignments were pair-programmed though, so we didn't often need git to be more than that.
