I started both Gravatar and GitHub as side projects. I sold Gravatar to Automattic after several years (though it was never profitable and became quite painful to run during the last year that I owned it). GitHub has been profitable since the day we started charging money (6 months after we started working on it) and we are now up to thirteen employees without having taken any funding. In both cases it was the viral element of the idea that made it possible for me to turn what was once a side project into something more. If you can't spend all day every day working on it, you need something that will grow even when you're not watering it. |
