Does Navlab not predate this work? It started in 1984. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navlab

The Navlab project and Dickmanns' projects (VaMoRs / Prometheus) were mostly concurrent, but, yeah, I think CMU started & published initial work first.
