You can hike right up to / behind the sign if you want to go there. The hike itself is an experience. The tram will enable the tourists who don't want to hike. I do agree with your sentiment that it will take away some of the magic from the current experience.

I mean you can just walk up to it - you don't need to hike anywhere. It's in the middle of urban environment. It's not somewhere in the wilds.
