It likely isn't what he's looking for, but if he's feeling that badly because of these difficulties (which are a difficult struggle, to be sure, but not catastrophic by any measure) it's not his life that's the problem. For some biochemical or psychological reason it's hitting him harder than it should; that's called, in many cases, clinical depression.
