This was told to me by someone who recently got into Google: "It is irrelevant whether you can come up a solution all by yourself. Being able to understand and remember the optimal solutions for those questions is the key. All the interviewer is looking for is whether you can write those optimal solutions literally on the whiteboard." We can debate (and people have here) about whether it makes sense and the like, but this is the reality.
