The easiest and cheapest answer is the status-quo, which is ambiguity on whether you're compliant with GDPR, so it's completely logical they would just block access.
I can't vote for the executives of the newspapers here in the U.S. (that right is held by the board members of each of those companies). You can vote for your EU parliament representatives. If there's things you don't like about the law you and your fellow citizens have the chance to change it.
