Indeed. The one close friend I have who participated in a successful sale of a startup said it made him a "thousandaire", so best to adjust expectations accordingly.
I have been a participant in 3 liquidity events. Each time amounted to 3-6 months of my then-salary. A nice bit of cash but hardly life-changing. And far from the promises any founders ever made... and the first one was less than I got in severance from that company a year later...
