A next generation internal / corporate portal. Everyplace I have worked at had either a really bad implementation of an internal portal or had a bunch of wiki pages clubbed together. It was incredibly difficult to get even basic info, such as where is the conference room, who works in the security team, what is the expense policy, so on a so forth. In my current multi billion dollar company, when I am meeting with someone new, I have to actually go to LinkedIn to understand what they do in the company and in what is their focus area.

I agree. I think if you could branch off what stripe has done with their 'home' feature, you'd have a real business on your hands. https://stripe.com/blog/stripe-home
I worked for a company within the a team that allocated quite some time to such internal tools as well as for others.

The real issue is how custom these solutions need to be and which weird rules and workflows some need to follow because of internal rules, iso norms and whatever else.

I don't think a one fits kinda all solution would ever really work. However i highly believe that companies need to allocate enough time to build tools that work _for them_
