This. Being able to work on code that you (or the person sitting next to you) didn't write is fundamental but often ignored in university courses.

My number one complaint about University Courses. We didn't spend a single minute doing what most of my job consists of: reading someone elses code and trying to decipher what the heck they were trying to do.

One you have done enough of it it maddens you enough not to make the same shitty mistakes. Keep things as simple as possible and no simpler.
