FWIW, PNG also "fails to protect the length of variable size fields". That is, it's possible to construct PNGs such that a 1-bit corruption gives an entirely different, and still valid, image. When I last looked into this issue, it seemed that erasure codes, like with Parchive/par/par2, was the way to go. (As others have mentioned here.) I haven't tried it out as I haven't needed that level of robustness. |
