Advertisers don't mind having their ads shown next to all violent content, only to some violent (and some "controversial" content). Most advertisers won't mind being shown next to a major news channel, but they might mind being shown next to a gore channel, or a channel run by some more radical news organizations. It isn't the content, it's the message. And that's a hard problem. There's one episode of Mad Man that addresses the same problem. An employee of the ad agency ends up having to read the scripts of all TV shows in advance to select the ones that a certain advertiser wouldn't want to be associated with, for example, those referencing abortion. |
