Personally, I'm happy to pay for high quality software as I understand someone needs to be paid in order to maintain it, but I like having access to the source in order to reduce risk and maintain more control over my environment. I think it's possible to release the source and still sell the app, Textual [0] seems like a good example of that. The make my favorite IRC client.
