Joel Spolsky had an interesting (and, I think, accurate) take on the pointlessness of performance appraisals: the only possible outcomes are it can be neutral, or you can completely piss off the person you're appraising. Yep, I completely agree about the accuracy. Last year it was neutral. This year it slipped down a notch.
