I completely agree with your criticism but I disagree with your conclusion.

The fact that some applicants will spend ridiculous amounts of time on a challenge is a critical flaw. It doesn't mean that take-home challenges are worthless, though. It just means they need a functional mechanism to enforce time limits equally on all candidates.
