We kind of have an idea of how individual neurons work, the problem is that all the interesting aspects seem to appear in tangled systems of millions (or much more) of neurons, and we don't understand that. If we want to study the collective behavior of neurons, then we do pretty much need to analyze or simulate large-ish portions of brains. |
