More like: this hobby got out of hand and is now taking too much of my time, despite the fact that there's financial compensation. cron.weekly wasn't created to be profitable, it was a side-effect of it becoming more successful, but I just need a mental break.

That is very uncharitable reading and besides, the article explains very clearly why that contributed to him not wanting to do cron anymore.

He kept up with those weekly releases for two years. That is damm lot of regularity and work.

That part there waits pros and cons of continuing. Original expectations have nothing to do with that.
