Used Chrome's "Make page mobile friendly" and could finally read the damn text.

It shows up on detected articles but I configured it to show up everywhere because most sites need it. There's probably an article out there somewhere. You have to change something in about:config

It's not any better in IE on desktop. (at work, not my choice of navigator).

Yep, I had to "request desktop site" in Firefox.
