Team cohesion is definitely not about using the same IDE.

I worked at a place that essentially standardized on Vim. They emphasised pair programming so IDE standardization helped with that. If you already use Vim, sounds great. If not, probably sounds terrible. So what looked like team cohesion was homogeneity. They subtly turned away a lot of people who didn't fit the mold in what should be a minor detail.

I've worked at two companies that basically banned Redis. Having a conversation with an SRE who had a bad experience, trying to convince him it's worth having this tool available, is one of my worst professional memories. Consensus driven technical decisions suck. It's better to give people authority and responsibility. I would have happily admined it myself.

Nobody's going to review Bob's code, not really. If they're not working directly with him on the project and it's doing anything reasonably complex, then they don't have the context to say anything useful beyond catching typos. Things get rewritten every few years anyway.
