I agree, the leap to 1,500 (in three sentences) needs to be explained. The analysis that was actually explained in the article led to an estimate of 1,250/y, which is slightly higher than but rather close to the numbers from other sources. The Guardian's list of people killed by police in 2015 and 2016 identifies approximately 1100/y.
