Sure the people are friendly in St. Paul/Minneapolis, but in my experience it is much harder to make friends outside of work. I guess that's where the saying, "Minnesota nice, they'll give you directions to anywhere but their house" comes from. I've heard this is due to people having a close knit group of friends that most likely hasn't changed much within the last 5+ years.

I've heard the opposite from friends who have moved to the West coast; they found it extremely easy to make friends outside of work because most people who live there are transplants themselves.
