When Medium started, I was amazed that people would just donate their content to Medium instead of owning it. Now I hope these people are amazed too...

It looks like you currently opt in to the paywall as a writer.

Of course, that could change.

Don't think it's a paywall, I just signed into my account and could read the story

EDIT: just noticed that I have "2" stories remaining to read. Didn't realise! It has this message

"Hanna Brooks Olsen locked this story for members, but you get three free passes each month. Upgrade for unlimited access."

Presumably the author has control over what they want to monetise
