I do agree that there are limits to shaming as tactic. I think society is actually quite good at, for example, being more lenient with younger people to afford them second chances (unlike the criminal justice system). I also think it's a tactic that stops working once a movement has grown to a certain critical mass: the thread of social boycott dissolves when they can easily fulfil their social needs within a community of like-minded extremists. The last point connects neatly with the common theme around echo chambers, just from a somewhat different direction. |
