Why is this on Show, as opposed to being in Show New? Can anyone shed some light or point me to external resources about this? Thanks!

Actually it's on both.

The 'show' has recent top submissions, selected and sorted by ranking algorithm [1], and 'show new' has all recent submissions, sorted in reverse chronological order.
