In the mathematical sciences, working on old problems using classical tools is typically considered career suicide. I can only imagine how depressing it must be to do academic research on age-old philosophical questions - an endless literature survey, at the end of which there is no light, because even if you "solve" the problem, many others will not find your solution satisfactory. |
