If AGI is possible, then whoever invents it will surely recognize both the power and the danger. Since there's no reason to believe that current academic/corporate/government/military AI research is even barking up the right tree, I can imagine a situation where someone invents AI in their basement, but keeps it locked up, exploiting it for personal gain. Then since it is possible, probably others will independently discover it in their independent basements. When one day an AI is finally made public, or "escapes", we might see a sudden mass emergence of separate AIs. What happens then is anybody's guess, but going by biological standards they might fight it out for control of available resources.
