You're a little late to the game :) It's been at least 2 years since people started throwing the word "AI" everywhere. Amazon was intensively using AI in 1999. As someone mentioned, it's been out since the 50s.

Buzz words are essentially generated by investors, used by companies and then consumed by the media. When you hear about something from the media, it's already too late.

Something I think is new in current cycle for AI is how often we hear prominent people citing it. For example Putins recent comments. I personally don't recall world leaders talking about it this way the last time around (80's).
Too late? The media has overhyped AI since the 50s but there are plenty of opportunities left in this space. We haven't even seen the tip of the iceberg yet. Most applications today remain relatively "dumb" with no significant AI component. It's far from too late. Cloud tech took a decade or so to become mainstream and ubiquitous, even after robust tooling arrived on the scene. AI is far from mature, and may evolve in unforeseen ways going forward.
