I would posit that the decrease in price of computational resources drives a couple of things - better quality (more resolution, colors, for e.g) and ease/cost of development.

You might see individual applications do the same things, and consume more resources due to the layers and layers of abstractions, BUT be cheaper to build. As a consequence, many, many, many more applications being built, for cheaper, reaching more people, "eating the world".
