The HD edition on steam used to run under wine. Now it doesn't, but you can roll back to a previous version for now.

Well, they say they now love Linux, so I expect a Linux version soon

I wouldn't. Games aren't written by DevDiv or the Azure team.

The current versions of AOE1 and 2 play well on Wine. Maybe this new edition will too, I hope.
